LIVE AUDIOVISUAL PERFORMANCE

THE PERFORMANCE

Quantum computing becomes part of the live creative process.

< escrita | excrita > brings together electroacoustic composition, live coding and digital visuals with the sonification and visualization of quantum algorithms, executed in real time on quantum hardware.

Through directed improvisation, the performers interact with these processes live, creating an evolving dialogue between human intention, computation, sound and image.

“There is no such thing as quantum music.”

This deliberately provocative statement sits at the heart of < escrita | excrita >

Rather than treating quantum computing as a technological spectacle or an automatic generator of musical material, the project approaches it as a distinct tool within the creative process.

Quantum algorithms are written, executed and interpreted in real time, becoming material for sound, image and improvisation. Human decisions remain central: the technology introduces new behaviours, possibilities and uncertainties with which the artists compose and perform.

The result is not an attempt to define a new genre of “quantum music”, but to explore a new poetic and technological grammar for musical writing.

< escrita | excrita > was presented at Ars Electronica 2025 in Deep Space 8K, one of the festival’s flagship immersive environments for works at the intersection of art, technology and society.

The performance brought quantum computation, live sound and real time visuals into a large scale audiovisual setting, extending the project from research into a fully realised live experience.

In this multimedia performance, the audience will experience the outcome of five years of research in Quantum Computer Music.

The piece integrates electroacoustic composition, live coding, and visual creation techniques with the sonification and visualization of quantum algorithms, including live execution on real quantum hardware accessed via QuTech’s open-access Quantum Inspire platform.

The work highlights quantum computing as a distinct tool in the creative process, exploring a new poetic-technological grammar for articulating this emerging medium.
